Big hair, bright colors, and shoulder pads were all the rage at the Boys & Girls Club Annual Dinner, held in the Harlan Civic Center on May 6th, 2022. Guest were treated to a totally radical evening of dinner, dancing, and a reverse auction filled with prizes, including a grand prize of $5,000.
The 80’s Prom themed evening started off with cocktail hour, where guests had time to get their pictures made at our backdrop, peruse and bid on silent auction items, and watch a fun, 80’s themed presentation that included messages from 80’s TV and movie stars like Lea Thompson (Back to the Future) and Michael Fishman (Roseanne).
Supporters really got into the spirit, with a wide variety of outfits ranging from Billy Ray Cyrus to Don Johnson and Molly Ringwald to Madonna. The dinner kicked off with an address by Boys & Girls Clubs of Appalachia CEO Kateena Haynes and a speech by our very own Kaleb McLendon, the Kentucky State Youth of the Year.
A delicious dinner catered by Taco Holler included smoked pork chops, broccoli casserole, and corn pudding was served with cheesecake desserts with various toppings. After dinner, the reverse raffle began with every 5th name winning a prize. Halfway through the raffle the Prom King and Queen were announced. The King and Queen were the two supporters that raised the most money for the Boys & Girls Club before the raffle intermission.
The King and Queen opened the dance floor where our guests got to bust a move to some totally outrageous tunes from the 80’s and a few modern dance favorites, too. A few dance battles even broke out! One attendee even sported white roller skates for the event!
Each year, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Appalachia put on our Annual Dinner as a fun way to support our mission to help the youth of our area grow and flourish. The support of the community is vital to the success of the Boys & Girls Club and this year the community came out and generously contributed through the annual dinner.
